Durban - Travelling abroad once or twice a year is a must for Hamida Shaikh and her family, but she has noted with concern how travel expenses have drastically increased.

She opts to travel abroad as she believes local holidays have become too expensive.

“I usually travel with my family. We realised we might as well use our money to go on overseas holidays because holidays in South Africa are equally expensive,” she said.

Shaikh previously went on holiday to Cape Town every December, but discovered that food, accommodation and flights could cost as much as a trip to India and decided to rather use the money to see the world.

Having travelled to places like India, Pakistan, England, Indonesia, Dubai, Bangkok, Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia over the years, often with her children and grandchildren, she says she has had to shorten their holidays due to inflation and the weakening of the rand.

Their most recent trip was in October, when they travelled to Turkey to visit relatives.

“Turkey was one of the most expensive destinations I have travelled to,” she said.

“Dubai is also expensive.

“I love travelling and even though travelling to these countries has been expensive, the beauty reels me in.” - Sunday Tribune
