London – The UK capital has the most expensive hotel rooms in Europe after rates soared by 16 per cent last year.

It overtook Zurich in Switzerland after the average night’s stay hit £126. The cost in Zurich is £110, with Paris coming third at £106.

New York was the world’s most expensive city, with a rate of £157, while Washington came in second at £130 and Rio de Janeiro third at £128.

The price survey was carried out by online reservations service HRS. Managing director Jon West said: ‘This is great for hoteliers – but not guests.’

London also overtook Sydney, Paris, New York, Stockholm, Zurich and Oslo to become the world’s most expensive city break destination.

The review website TripAdvisor said the average cost of an evening out and stay in a four-star hotel in the capital had soared to £311.80.

The news comes as it emerged that the surging value of the pound against the euro will save British tourists and business travellers heading to Europe an estimated £2.7billion this year.

Falling economic growth in the EU, deflation and turmoil in Greece have forced the value of the euro into reverse – and increased the buying power of the pound by 14 per cent compared with than a year ago.
