London - Families enjoying lunch by the sea were ordered to put their sandwiches away as picnics on the pier are banned.

Steven Dodd, 34, was at the beach with his children when they were told the benches they were using were reserved for customers of the pier’s cafes.

They had to wrap up their cheese and pickle sandwiches – while two pensioners were told to put away their cake.

Mr Dodd was on the pier in Southwold, Suffolk, with his children aged five, three and one. The upmarket town has been dubbed Notting Hill-on-Sea because of its popularity with celebrities. Mr Dodd described how he was feeding his children when a pier employee arrived and said: “Sorry, I’m going to have to ask you to put the picnic away.”

The father, from Ipswich, added: ‘”then walked round and told an old couple they couldn’t eat a piece of cake they had brought along in some Tupperware.”

Alex Paul, director of Gough Hotels which owns the pier, said he was “disappointed” the family had had a bad experience but confirmed the area was reserved for food outlet customers.
