Reykjavik - During this summer's Secret Solstice, a festival held in Iceland during a period of days when the sun never sets, party-goers can take it underground.

Seventy guests will join in a dance party, dubbed an “IceRave,” deep inside one of the world's largest glaciers.

For the price of $228 (about R3 000), guests will be conveyed from Reykjavik to the glacier. Iceland Monitor describes what happens next:

Once arriving at Langjökull, Europe's second-largest glacier, the remainder of the journey to the entrance to “Icerave” will be taken in ice explorer vehicles, modified from their previous roles of transporting rocket equipment for Nasa.

Guests will then descend into a man-made cave system, go on a 45-minute guided tour of the cave system and end up with private DJ sets by electronic artists Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Artwork, inside the glacial cavern.

According to local reports, the near kilometre-long glacial tunnel was completed in May. It'll be illuminated with LED lights, and the chambers beneath the ice will boast a cafe and spaces available for weddings.

Ever since the 2008 financial crisis, tiny Iceland has leaned heavily on tourism to spur economic growth. In the years since, the industry has become the largest contributor to Iceland's export revenue, surpassing even fishing.
