London - It may not seem like the most obvious choice for a family outing. But perhaps your family is missing out.

Snake-spotting in Dorset’s heathland is apparently among the best experiences Britain has to offer, according to Lonely Planet’s Best In Travel 2013 shortlist.

Other recommendations include riding a “Boris bike” in London and searching fields for discarded Roman coins.

But the biggest winner was Londonderry in Northern Ireland, which was named as the world’s fourth best city to visit, beaten only by San Francisco, Amsterdam and Hyderabad, India.

Dorset is regarded as the best place to view the adder, Britain’s only venomous native snake species.

The guide recommends: “Walk softly on warm spring days to witness adders, newly woken from hibernation, coiled like ammonites, with the chance of seeing Britain’s other two native species, grass snakes and smooth snakes.” - Daily Mail
