Reykjavik - Some people might say that volcanoes are places to be avoided. Especially if they happen to be in Iceland, a country that has prior form on mountains that are prone to explosive behaviour.

But intrepid visitors to Iceland will have extra opportunity to step into the void over the next four months, after the operators of a tour that ventures inside a volcano expanded their schedule – to the extent that, during the high summer days of late June, “night-time” excursions will be possible.

Iceland made headlines last year with the launch of visits to the Thrihnukagigur volcano.

In addition, for nine days this month (June 12-20), special “after-hours” descents will also be available, allowing tourists a glimpse of the volcano during the long hours of midnight sun – the surreal time of year when the sun does not set over Iceland.

Tours of the Thrihnukagigur crater cost 37 000 Icelandic kronás (R2 985).

Visitors are advised to book in advance. Further details via www.insidethevolcano.com – Daily Mail
