New York – New York City’s tourism industry was booming in 2014 with a record 56.4 million visitors to the city, the mayor’s office said Monday.

More than 44 million visitors came from other parts of the United States, while 12.2 million people came from abroad, with the UK, Canada, Brazil, France and China leading the way.

Visitors generated a record US $61.3 billion in overall economic impact in 2014.

Average hotel occupancy was 89 per cent throughout the year, with average daily room rates at $295.

Both numbers are the highest in the US.

The city offers visitors “hundreds of unique neighbourhoods and communities to explore,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

“Our excellent quality of life, low levels of crime and constant dynamism continue to attract record tourism each year,” he added.
