The Presidency on Monday announced President Jacob Zuma's release of the Fees Commission report
The Commission was established to explore the feasibility of fee higher education. Speculation is rife that Zuma will giving the thumbs up to free tertiary education. The rand, on Friday, took a dip amid the speculation. The report was published just after mid day on Monday.

Zuma has since denied claims that he plans to announce free education during the State of the Nation Address in February, but was stopped by Treasury. The SA Institute of Race Relations has estimated that free tertiary education would cost National Treasury in the region of R71bn per year.

UPDATE: The Commission has recommended that government increase its expenditure on higher education and training to at least 1 percent of the GDP. The report also recommends that all students at TVET Colleges receive fully subsidized free education in the form of grants that cover their full cost of study and that "no student should be partially funded."
The president has also refuted claims he planned to announce free education during the State of the Nation Address in February, but was stopped by Treasury.
