The mineworker found dead in the Khomanani mine in Rustenburg committed suicide, Anglo American Platinum said on Thursday.

Volethu Mkiza, a cementation hose operator, went missing on Tuesday and was found dead the following day, spokeswoman Bongeka Lwana said.

“Sadly, it is apparent that personal circumstances led him to make the unfortunate decision to end his life, as it is clear to all that he committed suicide underground.”

She said paramedics and his co-workers who saw the body, confirmed Mkiza committed suicide.

The company expressed its condolences to Mkiza's friends and family. The mine would not disclose the cause of death until his relatives had been informed. - Sapa
