CAPE TOWN - South African leading retailer, Edcon has on Monday awarded a rewards cardholder a whopping R1 million cash. 

What was meant to be a routine shopping trip for flight attendant, Olivia Ndebele had turned into an extraordinary day. The Kempton Park resident won R1 million cash at the Red Square store in Eastgate Shopping Centre.

“I had no idea that I stood a chance to win, I knew about the competition, but I was still so shocked to win.” Olivia and her husband, James Ndebele and children Sibusiso, Khanyisile and Khayalethu, plan to re-invest the money and start the business of her dreams. “This has changed my life, and I can’t thank thank U and Edcon enough”, says Ndebele.

The impressive win took place after Ndebele was selected as the R1 million prize winner for October in thank U’s Million and More monthly competition. 

In light of their recent credit card loss of 485 000 customers, Edcon has picked up the pace by rewarding their customers with a revitalised “thank U” programme. 

The competition, run at all Edcon stores took off in October. Following Edcon’s new spin to their “thank U rewards program”. The revitalised programme, aims to incentivise customer spending with added rewards.

"Our "thank U" programme has been substantially refreshed and strengthened.  This is now more rewarding, far simpler and with many additional opportunities to earn and spend at our approximately 1 330 Edcon stores.  This gives our customers far more benefits than those rewards that the previous card delivered to our millions of card users every day", said Edcon CEO Bernie Brookes in October.

Edcon customers can now earn points at South Africa’s largest fuel retailer, Engen when they fill up at Engen Quickshop Service Stations.Cardholders are rewarded with 150 thank U points per litre of fuel filled up at Engen Service Stations. Customers can also earn points by spending at approximately 13330 Edcon stores and are automatically entered into a lucky draw. 

It is this lucky draw that brought R1 million in cash for Ndebele. A mere R2 500 make-up purchase gained Ndebele entry into the draw. Subsequently, she was selected as the grand prize winner. 

Notably, other consumers also stand a chance to win in Edcon’s lucky draw. “The total prize money in the Edcon thank U’s Million and more monthly competition is R2 million. The first prize is the R1 million, won by Olivia in the October draw. The second prize, for two customers, are two Kia Picantos worth R140 000.00 each, followed by a third prize of two holidays worth R25 000.00 anywhere around South Africa”, said Clynt Lund, General Manager: Loyalty at Edcon. 

Upon officially receiving the cheque for her prize money at Red Aquare, Ndebele said she has always been a loyal Red Square shopper and plans to continue to shop at the Edcon group stores in appreciation for winning.
