Johannesburg - Eskom will have a permanent boss by the end of the year, according to Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown, who also indicated that the contract of the power utility’s interim chief executive would again be extended.

Brian Molefe, on loan from Transnet, was appointed to head the troubled power utility in April, and in July, his contract was extended for the first time.

In a parliamentary reply last week, Brown said “the appointment of the chief executive officer for Eskom will be finalised by the end of the calendar year”, adding at a briefing on Friday that Molefe’s contract would again be extended.

Molefe was appointed acting Eskom chief executive to “stabilise” the power utility after four top executives were suspended pending a board-ordered inquiry into the state-owned company’s state of affairs.

Three of the four have resigned and the fourth is back at work.

In March, Eskom board chairman Zola Tsotsi resigned and was replaced by Ben Ngubane in an acting capacity.
