JOHANNESBURG - Lonmin chief executive Ben Magara has written a letter to President Jacob Zuma, saying the world’s third-largest platinum producer planned to build bridges with the Bapo Ba Mogale, a mineral-rich community on whose land the company has operated since 1969.

In the letter, Magara said Lonmin acknowledged its responsibility to ensure a sustainable business to safeguard the interests of communities and its employees.

“Progress in community upliftment initiatives is dependent on effective collaboration with all stakeholders,” Lonmin said. Magara’s letter was prompted by the Bapo’s call for the suspension of Lonmin’s operations after the community claimed that the company had failed to meet its commitment to alleviate poverty and create jobs for the local community.
