MTN customers lose airtime and data due to technical error

DURBAN - Furious MTN users took to Twitter this Friday claiming that the mobile operating network, MTN wiped out their airtime, SMS and data balances overnight. 

Many of the MTN consumers were posting pictures on the social media platform that showed that they have zero balances for airtime, data and SMS. 

Jacqui O' Sullivan, the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs for MTN spoke about the issue in a statement. O' Sullivan said that there is an MTN technical error that affected about 1% of MTN customers and that the fault may impact, recharging, balances and customer minutes being reflected. 

She said: "The resolution of this problem is a priority and all balances and services will be restored in the course of today. We apologise for any inconvenience and are working to resolve this as quickly as possible".

Those affected by the technical error will receive a full refund of their airtime and data as soon as possible. MTN has also given those affected R100 airtime and 100MB of data while balances are being restored.

The message about the technical error is being passed on through MTN call centres, social media platform and it will be SMSed to affected customers. 

At the time of the statement, O' Sullivan said that fixing the issue is an absolute priority and they will restore the balances as soon as possible to avoid any concern and frustration to their valued customers.
