Johannesburg - Ongoing labour issues between the SA Post Office (SAPO) and the parastatal’s largest union, the CWU, have come to an end following them agreeing on a number of outstanding issues.

CWU general secretary Aubrey Tshabalala told reporters in Johannesburg on Tuesday that much progress had been made.

This included that back payments from 2014 would be paid in August as well as an increase of 6.5 percent on salaries. Also 900 casual employees would be made permanent next month.

Inflation is currently at 6.2 percent after easing from 7 percent.

“This effectively means that there will be no casual worker in the South African Post Office by 1st of August this year. The NEC [national executive committee] has given the mandate to the national office bearers to sign the agreement,” he said.

Tshabalala said the union was still in negotiations with the ANC on a number of issues.

These included whether the state would use the company as its sole state entity to provide service on courier freight, and if it would inject money into the struggling parastatal.

The organisation recently received R650 million from the Treasury after it recorded a R1.5 billion loss. Despite the government's intervention, the post office was not able to hold onto its courier business.
