Lonmin's role prior to the shooting of miners in Marikana should be investigated, the Young Communist League said on Saturday.

Secretary Buti Manamela welcomed investigations into the incident but stressed that Lonmin's role and the reasons behind the protest by miners needed to be investigated.

On August 16, 34 striking miners were gunned down by police at the Lonmin mine in the North West province. Another 78 were injured.

“People do not go on strike because the police are not properly trained,” Manamela told delegates at an anniversary celebration of the SA Student Congress at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. - Sapa
