South Africa’s valuable minerals for making batteries such as manganese and vanadium put it in a strong position to become a leader in the growing global battery industry. However, challenges such as the lack of balance between exports and creating local manufacturing, environmental concerns, and the need for sustainable mining practices must be addressed to realise this potential fully.
