1time airline scored an average on-time performance (OTP) of 96 percent in May, making it the most punctual of all South African carriers last month.

The airline also performed well last year and has an OTP average of 90 percent so far this year.

The OTP data was recently released by Airports Company South Africa (Acsa). According to Acsa’s website, OTP is the primary internationally accepted standard of airport operational efficiency.

Acsa’s results included domestic flights flying out of OR Tambo International, Cape Town International and King Shaka International airports.

From OR Tambo, the busiest local airport, 1time reached a 94 percent OTP, while both SAA and Airlink posted a 91 percent performance on the measure. SA Express and kulula.com both scored 88 percent.

1time chief executive Blacky Komani said this was testament to the airline’s continual determination to provide outstanding service.

“We always strive to ensure that our passengers have a pleasant and convenient flying experience. As such, on-time performance is an aspect of our business that we pay attention to, and we constantly strive for even better performance in this regard.” He attributed the group’s superior punctuality to factors including quality aircraft maintenance services, efficient passenger and ramp handling and a focus on departure control.

According to Acsa, OTP is measured by comparing the actual off-block time (when the aircraft pushes back) against the airline’s advertised leaving time. The measurement is in accordance with the International Airlines Transport Association’s global standard, which considers a 15-minute deviation from the scheduled time as an on-time departure. This is benchmarked against a target agreed on by airport stakeholders.

1time shares leapt 10 percent to 11c yesterday.
