The defence in the Jackie Selebi corruption trial on Wednesday started its argument in a bid to have him acquitted in the High Court in Johannesburg.

Selebi's counsel Jaap Cilliers argued before Judge Meyer Joffe that evidence presented by the State failed to prove allegations in the charge sheet.

"They , through their own witness, destroyed their whole case.

"We submit that the case starts with false allegations against the accused... and that the State disingenuously made a case without substantiating facts.

"The witness deliberately misled the court... his evidence contradicted the charge sheet. The State case is completely unreliable," said Cilliers.

Former police chief Selebi was facing a charge of corruption and defeating the ends of justice and had pleaded not guilty.
