Pretoria - Thursday sees the opening of Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, which can now boast being the largest mall in Africa.

After a R2.5 billion redevelopment the centre has a total lettable floor space of over 170 000 square metres and 500 stores, making it larger than Gateway in Umhlanga.

“We’ve put together a fantastic tenant mix that caters to all our shoppers,” says Olive Ndebele, general manager of Menlyn Park.

Among the established anchor tenants and top international brands are fashion drawcards Zara, Fabiani menswear and H&M Clothing; beauty stores including Lush Cosmetics, Candi & Co, Splush, Brow Bars and 3INA; and exciting entertainment destinations such as Hard Rock Cafe.

Earlier, the Grocery Village which includes Checkers Hyper, Food Lovers Market, New World Discount Stores and Pick n Pay, was opened.

A new drawcard is Central Park, an open-air piazza surrounded by Pride of India trees and edged with popular restaurants.

Ndebele says that Menlyn Park will reaffirm its place as the number-one destination in Pretoria for the best entertainment and shopping all year round, with events and special offers.

Just a day after the launch, Menlyn Park has “Black Friday”, a popular event for the start of the Christmas shopping season, and which is also gaining popularity in South Africa. Shoppers will be given an opportunity to take advantage of massive discounts from many stores at Menlyn Park.

Because of large numbers of shoppers expected for the launch and “Black Friday”, Menlyn Park has a “park and ride” service at the Glenstantia Primary School from November 24 to 27. The service runs every 30 minutes from 8am to 5pm.

The centre shops are open from 9am to 9pm (except on public holidays, when they close at 5pm).
