BLSA, KPMG put weight behind NDP
Business Leadership SA (BLSA) and auditing firm KPMG have reiterated the business community’s support of the National Development Plan (NDP) and even identified areas they could lend a hand to assist in the implementation of the plan. In a meeting that took place last week between KPMG, BLSA and the commissioners of the National Planning Commission, including Minister of National Planning Trevor Manuel, the two organisations described the NDP as “a gargantuan step forward” for South Africa. – Londiwe Buthelezi
Obamas’ income declines 23%
US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama earned $608 611 (R5.4 million) in adjusted gross income in 2012, down 23 percent from 2011, as royalties from the president’s books kept declining, tax returns show. Obama and his wife paid $112 214 in income taxes, for an 18.4 percent rate, according to the returns released on Friday. That is less than the 20.5 percent rate they paid the year before. – Bloomberg
Afrox designs new gas regulator
African Oxygen (Afrox) is reinvigorating its product manufacturing capacity after designing a new regulator for the gas cylinder market that “will excite the global market” and boost revenue. Managing director Brett Kimber said last week its manufacturing activities contributed 14 percent of turnover and, if Afrox got the distribution channels right for the new regulator, it could double this unit’s turnover.
