CAPE TOWN - The city of Cape Town has been nominated for the ‘World’s Leading Festival and Events Destination" award, after recently scooping the honour within the African continent.

In a statement on Tuesday, the city said it had become the envy of many global contemporaries as a result of its wide-ranging events portfolio, having continually affirmed its place as the events capital of Africa by securing key local and international events over the last five years.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said eight of the signature events supported by the city contributed more than R3 billion to the local economy.

“Events provide enormous benefit to the local economy, in terms of job creation, and play a pivotal role in generating visitor expenditure,” he said.

Smith and Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille will share the accolade with event organisers such as Billy Domingo of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Elana Meyer who runs the Cape Town Marathon, David Bellairs of Cape Town Cycle Tour, Debra Barnes of Two Oceans Marathon,Theo Koopman of Cape Town Summer Market and Rafiq Samsodien who is running the Cape Town International Film Festival currently underway at the V&A Waterfront.
