The DA's resolution on fracking has been withdrawn following a vote by delegates.

The party on Sunday afternoon re-examined the conditions of the resolution with the objective of amending it.

One delegate called for the withdrawal of the resolution and tjhis was endorsed following a vote by the Democratic Alliance's congress.

Earlier the party had resolved to support hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo, provided that it did not damage the environment.

The party's 2012 federal congress in Boksburg had said it would support the process, provided government reviewed current applications by gas companies to ensure compliance with legislation.

It had wanted government to initiate a strategic environmental assessment of “current unknowns” in order to facilitate responsible decision-making. - Sapa
