Johannesburg - Agri SA will this week strengthen its efforts aimed at canvassing for donations for drought relief funds to help farmers most affected by the ongoing drought.

Agri SA media liaison officer Thea Liebenberg said yesterday that this followed the initiative last week by Senwes, one of the major agribusinesses in the country, to join forces with Agri SA to establish the Drought Disaster Fund to provide assistance especially at humanitarian level, to farm workers’ families and rural communities exposed to drought.

The prevailing drought, accompanied by high temperatures, is one of the worst natural disasters experienced in the past 20 years. The consequences of the drought have a negative impact on the economic survival of many farmers, which in turn could have direct short-term consequences such as food shortages for rural communities and also for farmer and farmworker families.

“For this reason, it is important that an attempt be made to assist those who find themselves in this difficult situation,” Agri SA executive director Omri van Zyl said last week.
