The volume of electricity consumed in SA grew by 0.2% (48 Gigawatt-hours) year on year (y/y) in November, after it fell by a revised 0.8% (previously 1.4% y/y decline) in October, Statistics SA (Stats SA) said on Monday.

Electricity for the first eleven months of 2011 rose by 0.9% y/y. Electricity consumption for the third quarter of 2011 rose by 0.5% compared with the third quarter of 2010, however, seasonally adjusted electricity consumption fell by 3.5% in the third quarter of 2011 compared with the second quarter of 2011.

Stats SA also noted that the estimated electricity production rose by 0.2% y/y in November and was up 1.2% y/y in the first eleven months of 2011.

Electricity delivered by Eskom to the provinces decreased by 1.2% y/y (-214 Gigawatt-hours) in November 2011. The biggest decline was reported for Western Cape (-115 Gigawatt-hours). The total volume of electricity delivered by Eskom to the provinces for the first eleven months of 2011 grew by 0.1% y/y (267 Gigawatt-hours).

The volume of electricity purchased from outside South African borders (imports) increased by 5.4% y/y (55 Gigawatt-hours) in November 2011. For the first eleven months of 2011 imports decreased by 4.1% y/y (-460 Gigawatt-hours).

The volume of electricity sold to neighbouring countries (exports) increased by 4.9% y/y (65 Gigawatt-hours) in November 2011. For the first eleven months of 2011 exports increased by 1.6% y/y (219 Gigawatt-hours). - I-Net Bridge
