The Rich List has been published, showcasing South Africa’s wealthiest business men and women.

Topping the list for 2011 Ivan Glasenberg from Glencore International with an estimated net worth of R61.48 billion.

The wealthiest woman on the list Wendy Appelbaum with an estimated net worth of R1.99 billion.

Second on the wealth list for men is former De Beers owner Nicky Oppenheimer with an estimated net worth of R50.44 billion, while mining magnate Patrice Motsepe is placed third with an net worth of R26.68 billion.

The Rich List, was compiled by Intellidex, and looks at the super-rich and their role in the companies that they operate. Most of the companies are JSE listed entities.

The profiles of the super rich are available in Destiny and Destiny Man. Most of the individuals increased their net worth from 2010 under tough economic conditions.

“In addition, many of their names featured prominently on the 2011 global rich list. Further north on the continent, the richest man in Africa – for the first time - is Nigerian Aliko Dangote, whose fortune is estimated at almost R80 billion.”

This represents a growing trend of wealthy businessmen and women who are among the richest in the world and can be found in countries such as Nigeria, Egypt and Kenya. - Ayanda Mdluli
