Johannesburg - DA MP Tim Harris will head up investment promotion for the City of Cape Town, mayor Patricia de Lille said on Wednesday.

Harris would join her office to align city and provincial economic programmes, presenting a "united front" for investors looking to create jobs in the city.

Harris was the Democratic Alliance's finance spokesman in Parliament and developed the party's policies in this regard.

He had now left Parliament and was likely to start in his new position next month, said city spokeswoman Priya Reddy.

De Lille said Harris's involvement would help maintain Cape Town's status as "the best-run city in the country" and provide "new vigour" to make progress possible.

"With two years to go until the local government election in 2016, we are committed to extending Cape Town's lead as South Africa's premier investment destination." - Sapa
