Johannesburg - A new labour market research project will help drive economic development, Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande said in Pretoria on Tuesday.

The Labour Market Intelligence Research Project would be led by the Human Sciences Research Council.

“This project aims to set up systems for reliable data indicating skills needs, supply and demand in our labour market,” he said.

This would enable government and business to better plan skills training in accordance with the country's needs.

“The tools we have used to prioritise skills in this country have been based on a limited understanding and analysis of the... economy and the labour market.”

This research would provide crucial information to training institutions and the labour market and enable training institutions to be aligned with economic needs.

To expand and upgrade national infrastructure, skills were needed to drive construction and expand manufacturing and reduce unemployment. - Sapa
