Johannesburg - Disgruntled workers at Eskom’s Medupi power station in Lephalale, Limpopo, will on Tuesday get feedback from unions following a meeting with Eskom’s contractors.
At least 1 700 workers were issued with suspension notices after taking part in an illegal strike last month. They had grievances over bonuses and accommodation.
The workers held protests outside the premises last week, demanding to be allowed back to work.
Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said Eskom contractors met with unions on Monday.
“The meeting was between the contractors and the unions because the workers are employed by the contractors. The unions are expected to give feedback to workers on Tuesday at 2pm,” he said.
National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) spokesman Castro Ngobese said consultations between unions and employers continued.
“The negotiators will be consulting with workers on the outcome of the Monday meeting with employers, workers will decide from there on,” he said.
Medupi has been marred by construction delays.
On March 2, Eskom announced that Medupi’s Unit 6 produced power for the first time.
