first lady Graça Machel has proposed a national indaba or lekgotla to address the apartheid legacy. Speaking last week to the captains of industry during the final day of the Investing in Africa Mining Indaba in Cape Town, Machel said South Africa’s problems were structural and rooted in the apartheid legacy. A discussion would ensure that the country reviewed together what were the issues that needed to be dealt with and transformed, particularly in the mining industry, she said. This was in response to a question regarding mining companies’ reluctance to empower communities outside their 60km radius. – Siphamandla Goge
