Johannesburg - The ANC is the only political party which can deliver economic freedom, its deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday.

“Only the ANC can deliver economic freedom, no other party or organisation in this country can do so,” Ramaphosa told members of the African National Congress Youth League at the party's 69th anniversary in Johannesburg.

He said the ANC depended on the ANCYL to champion the fight for economic transformation.

“In order to realise economic freedom, the ANC can only do so if it is propelled by this engine called the ANCYL.”

Ramaphosa told its the members to read and develop themselves.

“You need to be ideologically clear and give substance to your various courses that include economic freedom and education.”

“To do that, you have to learn from past and present leadership, and read to better yourself... leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu were great leaders because they studied and did a lot of reading.”

The task of the ANCYL included rebuilding itself and doing away with arrogance and personality clashes.

“One leader was elected by you, and he became the be all and everything that is the ANCYL. We do not want that, the organisation should be about the collective, not individuals.” - Sapa
