Motorists should brace for a petrol price hike of 80c to 90c a litre from next Wednesday, said Hein Baak, director of petroleum in the Department of Minerals and Energy, on Wednesday.

The final audited price increases will be announced by the Central Energy Fund tomorrow.

Efficient Group’s chief economist, Dawie Roodt, said the weakening of the rand was largely to blame for the expected increase.

“It’s not a pretty picture,” said Roodt, adding that it would put an extra strain on consumers’ pockets, especially the poor, who were already facing electricity prices increases.

KZN Taxi Alliance general secretary Bafana Mhlongo said taxi associations intended increasing fares in the coming months. “The price of petrol increases frequently, so it is not a sole determining factor. It is, however, the taxi associations’ right to increase fares if costs are greater than profits.”

eThekwini Transport Authority deputy head Erik Moller said they did not expect a drastic increase in commuters using city buses because people generally stuck with their preferred mode of transport.
