Johannesburg -

Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu has met the principals of Mining Growth, Development and Employment Task Team (Migdett) to evaluate progress, her department said on Friday.

Her meeting with Migdett, which comprises government, organised labour and business, was held on Thursday, and agreed to strengthen and streamline programmes for 2013.

“The principals reiterated confidence in, and support for the Marikana Commission of Inquiry headed by 1/8retired 3/8 Judge Ian Farlam,” the department said in a statement.

“The meeting agrees and supports the establishment of a mining-specific commission of inquiry.”

President Jacob Zuma established the inquiry to determine why police shot and killed 34 striking miners and wounded 78 on August 16 in Marikana, North West.

The department said concerned parties commended the mine health and safety inspectorate for its work towards achieving no injuries or fatalities in the sector.

The meeting also discussed the extent of transformation in the sector.

“The meeting... agreed to work towards convergent performance reporting by each stakeholder on transformation progress in the sector,” the department said. - Sapa
