Johannesburg - Eskom implemented stage two rolling blackouts on Tuesday as the cold weather put pressure on the vulnerable power grid.

”Eskom will implement stage two load shedding from 6am this morning, and this is likely to continue until 10pm this evening,” the organisation said in a statement.”

The power utility started implementing stage two blackouts on Sunday. Stage 1 allows for up to 1000MW of the national load to be saved, stage 2 for up to 2000MW, and stage 3 for up to 4000MW.

The electricity supply system remained vulnerable due to a shortage of generation capacity as several units were out of service, Eskom said.

It called on customers to switch off geysers, air conditioners, pool pumps and all non-essential appliance to reduce electricity demand on the power grid.
