Stronger rand reason behind February fuel price drop

JOHANNESBURG - The retail price of petrol and the wholesale price of diesel in South Africa will fall on Wednesday as the rand has strengthened, the energy department said.

The price of petrol will fall by 30 cents to 14.12 rand per litre in commercial hub Gauteng province. Diesel will go down by 17 cents to 12.56 rand.

The department said the main reasons for the fuel price adjustments were due to the contribution of the rand/US dollar exchange rate. The rand appreciated in January, on average, against the dollar, which led to a lower contribution to the basic fuels price,
