DURBAN - A Purchasing Power Index by financial services company UBS examines the purchasing power of 77 cities across the world. 

For each city, UBS looked at the how much people earn and compared it to the number of items in their shopping basket, the result of which is the Purchasing Power Index. 

The higher the city is ranked, the more the people in that city can afford. 

Here is a look at the index and the top five highest and lowest cities on the index:

2015 vs 2018

The last time that the Purchasing Power Index was done was in 2015. The report showed which cities improved in 2018 in comparison to 2015. 

The city that did the biggest jump was Doha that moved up 18 spots from 37 to 19 in 2018. Another Middle Eastern country that had a big jump was Dubai that moved up 13 spots from 27 to 14. 

Other cities that improved include Copenhagen, Manama, Toronto and Taipei. 

Chicago was the only that showed in change from 2015 to 2018 and maintained their ranking at 6. 

However, cities like Cairo, Paris, Buenos Aires, Bratislava, Nicosia and Istanbul were not so lucky and lost their 2015 ranking in 2018. 

Brussels had the biggest drop in rankings. The city was ranked at 22 in 2015 and now holds a ranking at 41. The city is also one of the most expensive destinations for an expat. 

Bringing it closer to home, Johannesburg also experienced a drop rankings. The city dropped 7 spots from 36 in 2015 to 43 in 2018. It was also the only South African city on the list.
