A Chinese firm yesterday signed a $243 million (R1.6 billion) deal to construct a new hydroelectric power station in Zambia, officials said.

Syno Hydro Corporation would construct the Kariba North Bank power station on the Zambezi river about 225km south of Lusaka, said Rodnie Sisala, managing director of Zambia Electricity Supply.

Sisala said the 350 megawatt project would supplement an existing power station. Construction would start early next year - AFP
