MOZILLA began offering its first low-cost smartphone in India yesterday for 1 999 rupees (R353), in a bid to build market share for its open-source software in the fastest-growing market for such devices. The Cloud FX phone would run the Firefox operating system and offer games and other content through its applications store, Jane Hsu, Mozilla’s director of product marketing, said. The inexpensive smartphone push might be its best bet for gaining users in India, where more people access the internet on smartphones than computers. Indian consumers would buy 225 million smartphones this year, said Brad Rees, the chief executive of UK marketing company Mediacells. “The biggest barrier [to upgrading] for feature phone users is cost and usability,” Hsu said. “We think this is the best phone for them.” – Bloomberg
