The practice of taking your own picture from arm’s length and posting it on Facebook and other social media may have an unforeseen cost, according to a new study.

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery says one in three surgeons is reporting an increase in procedures due to patients being dissatisfied with how they look online. This includes a 10 percent increase in nose jobs, a 7 percent jump in hair transplants, and a 6 percent increase in eyelid surgery. The survey found 58 percent of surgeons saw an increase in plastic surgery among those under the age of 30, claims a press release on the impact of “selfies”.

Academy president Edward Farrior said: “These images are often the first impressions young people put out there to prospective friends, romantic interests and employers, and our patients want to put their best face forward.” – Sapa-dpa
