JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s headline consumer inflation quickened to 5.1% year-on-year in September from 4.8% in August, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Wednesday.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a 4.9% year-on-year inflation print.

On a month-on-month basis, inflation increased to 0.5% in September from 0.1% in August.

Core inflation, which excludes the prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages, petrol and energy was unchanged at 4.6% year-on-year in September, while on a month-on-month basis inflation rose to 0.4% from 0.1% previously.
