CAPE TOWN - MTN has upgraded its security systems by introducing a fingerprint recognition solution.
The biometric fingerprint scanning system will be used to tackle identity theft in its retail stores. When certain transactions are done, such as applying for a new contract or an additional SIM, or when performing a SIM swap. It will be used to authenticate the identity of contract subscribers.
MTN’s system will match customers’ fingerprints with their identity numbers by consulting the credit bureau’s consumer database.
"This is the first fingerprint biometric security system implemented by a telecoms operator in South Africa", said MTN.
"The biometrics will be used to authenticate the identity of post-paid subscribers when they undertake a range of transactions, including applying for a new contract or an additional Sim, performing an upgrade or Sim swap, and loading of chargeable value-added services,” MTN said in a statement on Wednesday.
