PRETORIA - A proportion of Tshwane Bus Service personnel this morning are reported to have blockaded the C de Wet Tshwane Bus Services depot preventing buses from leaving and left a number of commuters stranded.
It is alleged that the senior operators, artisans and general workers stationed two trucks at the main gate of the depot.
The City of Tshwane has confirmed that only three buses were able to get out before the personnel protest action.
The Tshwane Bus Service management was surprised that its personnel embarked on a strike as they did not make them aware of their intentions.
The municipality also revealed that the dissatisfied workers claim that they decided to down tools due to overtime and the apparent outsourcing of work to external companies.
It is understood that bus commuters in Centurion, Olivienhoutbosch, Danville, Pretoria East and some in Lotus Gardens have been affected by the strike.
"The City of Tshwane profusely apologises to our loyal bus commuters who have been left stranded and inconvenienced by the strike today and advises them to make alternative transport plans while we are resolving the issues that led to the strike. We condemn the behaviour of the striking personnel who should have utilised other avenues available to them to express their grievances than arbitrarily embarking on strike action," The City of Tshwane said in a statement.
