WATCH: Space X on a mission to change the way we travel
SYDNEY- Space X is looking to change the travel industry completely.
This morning at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia Elon Musk presented the BFR.
The BFR is a large scale rocket that is intended for travel to Mars and perhaps other planets in our solar system.
However, toward the end of his presentation Space X founder and chief executive officer Elon Musk proposed a slightly different use for the massive rocket.
Thhe idea he presented was that the rocket be used for travelling around Earth.
How it will work:
1. Passengers take a large boat from a dock in New York City to a floating launchpad out in the water
2. instead of heading off to another planet it will head off towards another city
3. The ship re-enters the atmosphere and touches down on another floating pad, much like the way SpaceX lands its Falcon 9 rockets at sea.
4.Other routes proposed include Hong Kong to Singapore in 22 minutes, London to Dubai or New York in 29 minutes and Los Angeles to Toronto in 24 minutes.
Both the new rocket and spaceship are currently theoretical, though Musk did say that he hopes to begin construction on the rocket in the next 6 to 9 months.
What makes this idea feasible is reusability of rockets. Being able to launch and then reuse a rocket for multiple other launches keeps the cost of building rockets down.
The BFR rocket would travel at a speed of 18 000mph and get you anywhere on Earth in under 60 minutes.
Space X hopes to launch the first BFR rocket later this year.
