Cape Town - The “Jazz Masters Tribute” will showcase a diverse group of professional jazz musicians who will pay homage to the Jazz Elders who have paved the way for South African jazz music.

“This tribute highlights the work of legends and introduces the work of those they have inspired”, associate producer Craig Parks said.

“They are fine-tuning their musical instruments and polishing their voices, to deliver a life-changing musical experience during the 3-day concert series,” he added. The “Jazz Masters Tribute” will be showcased at Artscape Theatre Centre until September 30.

The jam-packed line up will include the likes of Zoe Modiga, Nomfundo Xaluva, Amanda Tiffin, McCoy Mrubata, Sylvia Mdunyelwa, Alvin Dyers and Hilton Schilder among others. They’ll dedicate their tributes in honour and in memory of our fallen jazz legends such as Miriam Makeba, Errol Dyers and the Ngcukana Brothers.

The jazz series is also an opportunity for musicians to reconnect with one another in celebrating this year’s Heritage Month.

Sylvia Mdunyelwa, billed to perform alongside McCoy Mrubata, said: “I worked for many years with Errol Dyers and other greats and I miss them. The jazz serisl is very important to keep the previous legacy of our departed legends alive and I am excited for the opportunity to work with McCoy Mrubata who I last worked with when we were recording my CD in 2000”.

For the families of Alvin Dyers and Hilton Schilder, the Jazz Masters Tribute legacy is much more than a celebration. It is trip down memory lane as they take centre stage with their respective bands in paying an emotional tribute to their departed family members who have contributed greatly to the legacy of Cape jazz such as the late Errol Dyers and Tony Schilder.

Complementing the 3-day concert, Hilton Schilder will showcase his exhibition of visual art depicting Cape Town jazz through the ages. It will be displayed in the Theatre foyer prior to and for the duration of the Jazz Masters Tribute.

The Jazz Masters Tribute forms part of Artscape Theatre Centre’s arts transformation policy, which has as its objective the elevation of formerly marginalised art forms, such as jazz, panstsula and hip-hop, on centre stage alongside Western art forms, consequentially offering a platform for all professional art forms as a “home for all”.

Tickets (R100 per person) are available via Computicket or Artscape-Dial-a-Seat 021 421 7695.
