CAPE TOWN - The Cape is home to many splendid drives. Splendid not only for their views, mind you.

The adventures and wonder you can find along them are the stuff of legend.

One such drive is along the R44, between Somerset West and Stellenbosch.

Along the route, you’ll find wine estates, markets, padstalletjies, stud farms, nurseries and more.

And if you head out on a Sunday, be sure to pull into Blaauwklippen, where a market will provide you with the perfect day out.

The gates open at 10am and you’ll do well to arrive early - seating at the trestle tables is snapped up fairly quickly and families with picnic blankets grab all the cool shady spots under the trees.

The lady and I often only arrive after church, and while there may not be place to sit, there’s plenty of browsing to do while you munch on all manner of amazing eats.

There’s a lamb spitbraai, curries of all persuasions, traditional Dutch food, Sicillian arancini, flammkuchen, pizza, German bratwurst with pickles - you name it, you’re likely to find it, or something similar at the market.

Take a stroll through the indoor fresh produce market - of particular delight is the decadent flavoured butter - and you'll find you might buy more than your pantry or fridge can hold.

The live music is spectacular and there’s plenty on offer to drink as well, whether you like alcoholic drinks or not.

Speaking of alcohol-infused treats, there’s an ice cream parlour at the market that caters to the adult palate.

In the old stable, you’ll find collectibles, vintage and antique items, and plenty of tierlantynties to keep your curiosity occupied.

There’s also plenty for the kids to do - from jumping castles to tractor rides and little farm animals on display. There’s plenty of choice for them to eat too, and a few places even make up kiddies portions.

Be sure to try the coffee, it’s amazing, and what better way to end the day with one, served, of course, with a “cronut” - a unique and delicious marriage between a croissant and a doughnut.

You’ll thank me later.
