Cape Town - MEC for community safety Dan Plato will meet with Ocean View community leaders this week to address the community’s grievances.

Plato met with the community over the weekend after protests erupted earlier last week.

"The main focus for me when I visited the area was to stop the violence," Plato said.

Among the grievances raised by the community was poor police presence, specifically at night. The community also demanded a change in management at the local police station.

Community Safety MEC Dan Plato was in Ocean View on Friday afternoon following three days of protesting.

“The community said they are not going to tolerate this any longer. My plan is to get the direction of the community leaders in going forward to address the grievances of the community,” Plato said.

Community Policing Forum chairperson Kathy Cronje said: "The community is extremely satisfied that the MEC visited the area. It shows that someone has finally listened to them and takes them seriously."

There was a strong police presence over the Heritage Day weekend in Ocean View.

Fed up residents had taken to the streets to protest against ongoing crime in the area. On Friday residents burned tyres and other debris on the main road and threw stones at police.

Police used a water cannon to disperse the crowd.
