Cape Town - Classical music maestros across the country are gearing up to battle it out for the top spot at the 34th National Youth Music Competition.

The six finalists will stand to win more than R1450 00 in prizes.

The overall winner will be invited to perform at a concert at Overstrand Arts in Hermanus.

The Western Cape finalists will be invited by the Hugo Lambrechts Trust to perform at a concert at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium and the best pianist will be invited to perform in a concert at North West University in Potchefstroom.

National Youth Music Competition founder Michael Maas said the competition is supported by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Fine Music Radio, which caters for classical musicians who are too young to qualify for the Unisa International Music and the ATKV Muziq competitions, or too old for the Samro Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition.

Entrance is free to the first three rounds of the event. The finalists’ gala concert will be held on October 13 at 7pm.

Tickets are R120; R90 for pensioners, students and pupils.
