CAPE TOWN – Senzo Ponoyi (28) and Nkosiphendule Khanyana(35) appeared at Bellville Regional Court on a charge of armed robbery on Tuesday, 27 November 2018.
This follows a cash-in-transit heist that dates back in May 2016 at Parow Shopping Centre, in Cape Town. A G4S Security was accosted by two suspects as he was returning to the track after collecting money at the mall. They pointed him with what appeared to be firearms and demanded the money bag with an undisclosed amount of money.
The suspects fled on foot towards the railway line near the mall with the money box, which exploded along the way and were later arrested by the police.
They were both found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances. The case against the duo was postponed to 21 January 2019 for sentencing.
Earlier this month, Terence Lazao (26) appeared at Khayelitsha Regional Court, facing a charged of ATM bombing.
The incident dates back to 21 July 2016. Several suspects allegedly armed with a pickaxe and a firearm, shot at the security guards who had cash at a Mini Market in Mitchells Plain before placing the explosives on the ATM.
The explosives discharged shortly after placement, but the safe was not breached and suspects fled the scene. Terence Lazao was later arrested nearby with a back-pack containing a detonator cord in his possession, more explosives devices were found at his residence.
Lazao entered into a plea sentence agreement with the state and was sentenced to five years imprisonment suspended for five years with stringent conditions attached.
