Cape Town - The NSRI is to become the beneficiary of a 7.5km swim from Robben Island to Big Bay that fitness enthusiast Liezel van der Westhuizen will undertake this month.

"So far, the non-profit National Sea Rescue Institute has impacted the lives of more than 3 000 children and many communities through their water safety programmes, and I wanted to do my part in helping lower the figure of 29% of fatal drownings occurring among kids under 14 years old,” said Van der Westhuizen, who has already taken on the likes of Ironman triathlons, endurance competitions, and sports challenges such as tandem cycling the Himalayas with a blind athlete.

During her latest conquest – taking on a challenging swim – she will be accompanied by a group of NSRI volunteers. The swim is a fund-raiser for the institute’s Water Safety Education & Survival Swimming programmes.

The programmes aim to reduce the number of drownings in South Africa. Children under the age of 14 constitute 29% of drownings in the country.

As a passionate fitness enthusiast, and someone invested in making her country and its people better, safer, healthier and more successful, Van der Westhuizen has already raised R2 500, while the NSRI has a target of R100 000 for this fund-raising initiative.
