Cape Town - A food drive in Ravensmead hopes to bring relief to the community there during the festive season.

Through an opportunity to serve and give back to the community, an old boy and his team are accelerating into the season of giving with their creative official launch of The Can Drive.

Kelvin Langenhoven and a group from Ravensmead are giving back to their alma mater, Florida High School.

Langenhoven said it all started after teacher Joy Peterson asked for help with her project to hand out food parcels.

“I started a WhatsApp group and laid it on the table with my team and then took it to the school. We give monthly contributions to cut the bushes on what used to be sports grounds and our plan on this project is to restore our school’s pride. To launch, we wanted to come up with an attractive way to lure people and get them involved.”

The Can Drive is calling on communities to donate non-perishable food items to be distributed as hampers to the needy.

On November 27, they will have their first official drive where donations can be dropped off and live music can be enjoyed on the grass, including performances by The Abe Landsberg band and DJs Mickey and Perry.

Donors can also braai with their friends while they enjoy the show. The cover charge is R30 a person and all funds are going to the needy as a hamper.

“The event will start from 9am until 7pm. We would like to give out 50 hampers and are aiming for 500. It sounds like a lot, but we believe that with God’s help we can achieve it.”

Abe Landsberg said the band is excited to entertain the crowd.

“We do a lot of fund-raisers as well in conjunction with Biker Club and Cansa.”

Langenhoven said like most communities, gangsterism was the norm within the Ravensmead community.

“The immediate surroundings of the school have a history of vandalism and drugs. We want to do what we can to assist the community. The school is responsible for the distribution.”
