Cape Town - Drift City has returned to the Grand Parade in Cape Town's CBD, with the city's top drifters joining at least one international driver on the course.

The competition acts as an unofficial qualifier for the Gymkhana GRiD.

The GRiD finals take place on December 1.

"Drift City is burning rubber on the Grand Parade," said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security; and social services for the City of Cape Town.

"The competition is acting as the unofficial qualifier for the Gymkhana GRiD competition with Ken Block. This year features 32 drivers in total including two female drivers.

"Now for its third year running, the race organisers have managed to bring in one international driver, Dan Cross and people have responded with bigger audiences than last year," Smith said.

"The City has increased sponsorship this year to R150 000 towards City services (all safety and security, as well as cleansing and solid waste) and free usage of the Grand Parade. 

"This is an exciting locally born and bred event with lots of local talent participating from Strandfontein to Grassy Park and Brackenfell," he said.
